Wyred, Your Wyre Scouts Newsletter – July 2020 Edition

In this edition:

A Message from our District Commissioner, Jon Minshull:

The last few months have been an extremely challenging period for us all and it has been fantastic to see that our young people have still been able to benefit from a range of virtual activities across the district. We should be proud of what we are achieving and, as volunteers, we continue to support our young people and the communities in which they live.

As you will be aware, we now have a framework which will allow us to return to face to face Scouting in a safe and controlled way. Together, as a team, we will continue to support each other through this phased return and, in time, be able to get back to offering young people a fun, adventurous and exciting face to face programme of activities.

Thank you for all that you are doing and I look forward to seeing many of you at the Wyre Scouts Virtual Camp.

Jon

District Executive Nominations and Elections:

Do you have what it takes to make decisions, shape futures and change lives? Wyre Scouts are seeking new trustees and members of the District Executive Committee. Their role is to help shape Scouting in Wyre and enable more people than ever before to enjoy and benefit from the experience of Scouting. We especially want to hear from young people between the ages of 18-25 to become members of the Executive to develop our Youth-Shaped District. Read the information pack and then contact Neil Ralph or Jon Minshull for an informal chat.

A separate email will be sent out once nominations close explaining how to vote in the election.

Getting Back Together, Safely:

Thanks to all those who were able to make our All Members Meeting on Thursday, 23rd July, in case you missed it you can find the presentation here. This handy video also gives you great guidance in helping you return to face to face Scouting.

An email was sent to all members regarding the return to face to face Scouting, if you haven’t seen that, you can view that here.

Wyre Scouts Website – Member’s Area:
We’ve created a member’s only area on the Wyre Scouts website. The area is a work in progress and will be continually updated with documents and important information. Please ask your GSL for the password. The member’s area can be accessed here.

We’re very excited for our Virtual Camp and we hope you are as well. If you need any assistance during the event, please email Keith or the Media Team.

Please encourage parents to upload photos to the link shared in the pack. Please note that all the pictures uploaded can be viewed by the general public and may be used by West Lancashire Scouts for future publicity.

Africa 2021 – Fundraising:
West Lancashire Scouts are going to Malawi in 2021! Several young people in Wyre have been selected to take part in this amazing opportunity, they are: Ben Walsh, Isaac Hill, Austin Jewell and Luke Thornton. Carla Addison, is also attending the trip as an Assistant Unit Leader!

We’ve been talking to Ben, from Tankensuru Explorer Scout Unit about his fundraising endeavours:

“Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we had to be selected over Zoom as we weren’t able to do a selection weekend in person. However, the selection weekend included lots of fun challenges that allowed the leaders to see if we were suitable for the trip, or not.

The cost of the trip is £2000 and then we also have to raise another £500 to cover the cost of the building materials. We’ll be travelling out to Malawi next summer to build (from scratch), an education centre, which will operate as a preschool in the mornings, a venue for extracurricular activities in the afternoon and as a place for adult education in the evening.

So far, I’ve raised about £500 by selling tomato plants, key rings and lanyards. I’m very excited for the trip and would be incredibly grateful if you could support me, and the other young people going from Wyre Scouts in reaching our fundraising goals.”

– Ben Walsh

You can support Ben, Isaac, Austin, Luke and Carla in reaching their fundraising goal by buying on of their facemasks:
