They have already begun the handover of information and current workload in preparation for Neil to stand down on 31st March. Ian has accepted my offer of a 5 year appointment which will ensure much needed stability is in place in Wyre District. Naturally, as with all new DC’s Ian is mindful there is much to absorb and this will take a number of months. Your support in this vital period is most appreciated.

Many will know Ian in his current role as District Explorer Scout Commissioner. Whilst his adult Scouting began in Wyre in 1978, he has travelled throughout his RAF career and completed 32yrs adult Scouting service in five different Scout Counties. I’ve no doubt that this breadth of experience in Scouting will help in his new role to lead Wyre District.

Wyre has much to be proud of. Nevertheless Ian’s single most important priority in this next period is to ensure more young people benefit from what Scouting has to offer than currently do. This will be achieved by ensuring we continue to support Scout Groups and operate a strong Explorer Scout section. The quality of the programme remains the vital ingredient in what do week in, week out. The growth of membership will be achieved be concentrating on these areas, plus of course the very worthwhile targeted support that Wyre has witnessed in recent times.

Despite his best efforts to go quietly, I hope the District finds a suitable public occasion to thank Neil. The role of a DC is an energy sapping, time consuming and often lonely role. Neil has given tremendous commitment to the role and as any good Scout should, has left Scouting in a better state than he found it. Once he has overcome some immediate priorities outside of Scouting, and had a well earned break, I’ve no doubt he will find an hour a week to muck in where needed.

This is an exciting time for Wyre. I know you will join me in congratulating Ian and wishing Neil well for the future.

In Scouting,

Carl Hankinson

County Commissioner
